    GUEST DJ BIOGRAPHY

    1. dj Soulful

Biography: BIO EN Born in 1960 (yes, i’m 45 year old, by now), i’m considered on of the older dj of the Milan music environment, even if my soul continue to be younger than my body…. I started working with music since I was 15 years old. In 1978 I was co-founder of one of the first radio broadcasting station in Milan and I was starting my dj career in Milan discos and in some important tourist locations (guest dj of Stork Club in Madonna di Campiglio for many years). Stopped the dj activity at the beginning of 90’ for business and family reasons plus missing the inspiration due to the low quality level of the music at that time. With the new wave of ethnic and lounge music and the creation of new music bar concept (as Buddha Bar, Supperclub, Cafè del Mar) I restarted in 2003 the dj activity sharing the time with my main entrepreneurial capacity in the Management Consulting industry. (this is what I call “Alter Ego”!) The music I love should be identified by the concept of “bella musica”, but to be more comprehensive, here is what I love to play: ethnic, world, chill-out, lounge, chill house, deep house, jazz ‘n house, soulful house, electro (just few), nu jazz, break & bossa, downtempo, uptempo, groove, ....... etc., etc.. On demand and just for special party i resume my old 70/80 dance vinil mix .... (ohhhhhhhhhh) I use to play my livesets in different places in Milan, with fixed date at Colonial Fashion Cafè every Sunday evening until 11:00 PM, often at Siddharta (love it too), only with love and passion: many people say they feel it… (thanks!!!) My dream: a djset with Nicola Conte and Stefania Di Pierro (one of the most amazing vocalist i know)

    3. the dining rooms (Schema)

Biography: THE DINING ROOMS BIOGRAPHY The Dining Rooms are Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti. They were born in 1998 from a concept by Stefano Ghittoni, who is resident DJ @ Magazzini Generali in Milan on wednsday from 1995. Cesare Malfatti is founding member of the post-blues project 'La Crus', they both come from the punk / new wave scene and they've played in several underground bands. In the beginning of 1999 the electronic label Milano 2000 releases "Subterranean Modern Volume 1": the record displays hip hop and funky rhythms flowing alongside textures of blues guitars and melancholic keyboards. Alongside with this record Stefano Ghittoni works with videomaker Maria Arena on the "Ambient Blues Caffe'" project, an ambient sonorization for turntables and videos they will bring all over Italy and as far as London, in June 2000 at 291 Gallery. The second album "Numero Deux", which features a CD Rom track with videos by Maria Arena (one of them dedicated to J.L.Godard), is released in January 2001 and it goes on from where the first record had left off, adding some jazz atmospheres and some sung parts by the minimal-soul project "Sepiatone" (Hugo Race and Marta Collica). To promote the new record at best, The Dining Rooms have worked on a new live show named "Film". It's the natural development of "Ambient Blues Caffe'" and will feature the usual DJ sets by Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti, the live set by The Dining Rooms (computer, samplers and turntable) and the visual part by Maria Arena. In The summer of 2001(21 august)"Numero deux" will be released in U.S.A., Japan and Germany through Guidance Recordings, the album is the follow up of "The numero deux ep", a limited 12" released the second of august. "Tre", the third album released in spring 2003 on Schema Records, further deepens the themes of the two preceding albums, adding faster rhythms and increasing the number of proper songs, that are now four. The record profited from the vocal contributions by Anna Clementi and Sean Martin and the musical contributions by Soulpatrol, among the others. "Tre" was released as well as its predecessor in Germany and the US on Guidance Recordings . In the beginning of 2004 a new record is released: "Versioni Particolari" includes previously unreleased 12" remix series and is made of reworking, new versions or collaborations with cinematic soul funk dons like Nicola Conte, Soulpatrol and The Cinematic Orchestra among the others. With such an imaginative sound, it's natural that gigs are very important in TDR life. The TDR live show is based on the concept that images (by Maria Arena) can't be split from sounds coming from a 5 pieces live session and recreating imaginary landscapes. The live experience and the idea to work on songwriting become the basis for the fourth studio album, "Experiments in ambient soul", to be released through Schema in late spring 2005. E.i.a.s. is a journey in funk and jazz and a collection of inspired and spiritual tracks featuring the contributions of Don Freeman, Amraah 8, Sean Martin, Marta Collica and Hugo Race. Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti are also involved in some side projects, with Stefano giving his touch to afro-brazilian combo Vuca and Cesare expressing his love for abstract and avant pop in Noorda. With the help of Schema, in early 2004 Stefano created a new label called Big Sur, specialized in afro-house and funky rhythms : here he releases tracks as Double Beat, another project in which he is involved as a producer with Marco Rigamonti.

Swedish Underfed Music Operators, as the abbreviation stands for, have earned respect from various camps on the club scene. S.U.M.O.'s music doesn't sound typically Swedish. Their playfull mix of Latin vibes and Afro beats gives their music a unique, exotic sound. CHeck out their album, Rebounces, refers to S.U.M.O.'s own way of remixing. Listen djmix Launch Radio Player S.U.M.O BIOGRAPHY (download .pdf 87K) Bio EN S.U.M.O Meet S.U.M.O. – Sweden’s hardest working producer duo on the house scene. In just four years they have become well known and respected for their productions and remixes (or rebounces as they call themselves). These days they are topical with their remix album to be released on their own new record label HEYA HIFI. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Who are S.U.M.O.? Combo and Alf Tumble. So, who’s Combo and who’s Alf? Combo was born in 1976, astro Sagittarius, in a kitchen (his mother was a chef in a cross-over restaurant in Stockholm). His father being a musician, Combos appetite for music eventually started to grow. With a saxophone he began exploring the world of music, a curiousity that he brought with him into the studio when he teamed up with Alf in 1999. Alf, nick name Tumble, was born in 1978, astro unknown. He started out as a very ambitious dj in elementary school, striving to get the girls attention. Ten years later, when he met this jazz dude Combo, he realized that you could also earn a buck on the music, not only fast love. Together they formed S.U.M.O. and since then Alf has been spinning records all over the map, with or without Combo, but always in a true tumblin’ style. And the name S.U.M.O.? Swedish Underfed Music Operators. The abreviation underlines that they are too skinny to actually call themselves real sumos, even though they both enjoy food. They also feel underfed of warm lively dance music, living in Sweden. Describe the sound? They don’t really have one sound. Their curiousity has led them to worlds of afro, jazz and latin, each giving every new production a different sound than the former. House music usually being the foundation. So that’s why their music is supported by a wide range of djs, like Martin Solveig, Rainer Trüby, Roger Sanchez and Gilles Peterson? That’s possible. S.U.M.O. don’t sound typical Scandinavian… That’s right. But they’re truly based in the heart of Sweden. Today there are several talented producers from Scandinavia with alternative perspectives on dance music. So hopefully the idea of the Scandinavian sound is changing. S.U.M.O. are doing their best to help. So who or what are their main in?uences? Since the food that you eat eventually becomes a part of you, S.U.M.O. think that food greatly in?uences what kind of music they produce. Musicwise they listen to everything, but house music has always been the platform. You can actually say that they’ve explored genres like afro and latin via house, not the other way around. How do they work together? They don’t actually. In the studio they always work in shifts, never at the same time. It bene?ts the productions. The song takes a different direction each shift and even though one of them have a clear idea when he starts he can never be sure of the ?nal outcome. This way of working is like starting (or ?nishing) something new everyday. S.U.M.O. SESSIONS, what’s that? Besides dj’ing they have put together a live set together with their favourite Swedish musicians. The composition varies from time to time. Last time the major theme of the set was “Africa”. They always try to make their performances suitable for clubs, which is the best place for people to consume their music. Sometimes S.U.M.O. also bring just a vocalist or a musician, to perform secretly to spice up a dj-set. What are S.U.M.O. doing in ?ve years? They have always been on the search for the perfect groove. If they have found it by then the world will be dancing. If not, they’ll still be searching. Hopefully their label HEYA HIFI is well known for it’s output. HISTORY 1999. Combo and Alf meet during a recording session. Sharing the same view on dance music they decide to start working together. Their ?rst production is a remix of Taxi’s “Living on the wire” on the German label Infracom. It is released under the moniker Tumble & Combo. 2000. The guys split up; Combo moves to New York and Alf heads for London. Back in Stockholm 7 months later they decide to pick up where they left things. The result is signed to the NYC-label Trackmode. The name of the record is “S.U.M.O. EP1” and in that moment S.U.M.O. is born. 2001. S.U.M.O. team up with Los Angeles based label Seasons. This is the beginning of a long time relationship which will result in numerous EP’s and the album “S.U.M.O. Workout”. S.U.M.O. move to their ?rst own studio which they call HEYA (Japanese for the house where sumos live, eat and practice). 2002. Inspired by Alf’s success as a dj, Combo joins the game himself. S.U.M.O. get their ?rst big hit, ”Wintersong” featuring Karime Kendra, released on the French label Africanism/Yellow. During the spring of 2002 the guys put together a live act called S.U.M.O. SESSIONS. With Alf on the decks, Combo on the saxophone, their favourite percussionist Thomas Eby (who you can hear on many of their productions) and the multi talanted Rasmus Faber on keys they tour all over Scandinavia. 2003. S.U.M.O. go on a 2 weeks long dj-tour in the States. This years edition of S.U.M.O. SESSIONS features the Ugandan singer and bassplayer Sammy Kasule. The latin explosion ”Samba Consumo” featuring Simone Moreno reaches the number 1 spot in DJ Magazine’s Hype Chart. S.U.M.O. also receive two awards at the Scandinavian Music Conference, one for best act/artist and one for best 12” (Wintersong). 2004. S.U.M.O. go on their second dj-tour in the States ending up at WMC in Miami, where one of the hottest tunes is S.U.M.O.’s own ”Supra Sumo”. It reaches nr 1 at DJ-Mags Hype Chart later in the spring. They also take their S.U.M.O. Sessions to London (UK) and give a performance at the Trans Europe Express Festival. In time for the fall the boys shut the door to HEYA Studios and start working on their remix album to be released on their own label HEYA HIFI 2005.
